Some of the scariest looking spiders out there are the garden spiders. They are often brightly colored, with long, fang-like legs, and their appearance seems to imply that you want to stay as far away from them as possible. But are they really a threat?
Are they dangerous?
Luckily, despite their aggressive appearance, garden spiders are not dangerous. They do have venom, and if they bite, it will feel like a bee sting, with some pain and swelling, but overall, they do not pose a threat unless you happen to be allergic to their venom.
The main problem with these spiders is that they make a giant mess. They build massive webs inside bushes or between plants, and they are quite an eye sore. They will help keep other insect populations under control though, including mosquitoes and wasps, so there is a trade-off if you choose to remove these spiders. With that being said, if you are dealing with a mosquito or wasp infestation, having a garden infestation to control it is not really the best solution. Ideally, you would remove all the pest infestations that are present.
How to prevent and remove garden spiders
Preventing garden spider infestations can be done by using residual insecticides. These insecticides are usually used indoors, and they basically kill any insect that comes into contact with them. They also offer protection for a considerable amount of time – usually six months. When applied by a pro, they can protect your garden from all types of spiders for extended periods of time. So they’re actually very useful if you have also seen black widows or brown recluses in your backyard.
The removal process is very similar to the prevention process, and the two are not sold as separate services. The only difference between the two is that a pro will kill any spiders that are out in the open, destroy their webs and locate and destroy their nests. Then, the pro will apply the insecticides to kill any remaining spiders and prevent them from coming back.
All in all, garden spiders are not very dangerous, but they can be a serious nuisance, both in terms of the mess they make and in terms of their painful sting.
